Dark Knight sequel update

The creators of (possibly) one of the most hyped movies of all time, “The Dark Knight,” are already speculating about the third film in the eventual trilogy (at least according to Christopher Nolan they will stop at three films). David Goyer, who’s had a writing credit on both “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight,” has given his two cents about the potential villains in the next film, according to movies.ie:

Catwoman and Penguin, who have both been featured in past Batman movies, won’t even be considered as characters in this reinvention of Gotham City, said Goyer. Although both The Joker and Two-Face have been featured in Batman movies before, Goyer said the team on this trilogy wants to dig deeper and find villains that have never hit the silver screen, like they did for Scarecrow in “Batman Begins.”

Goyer had this to say:

Batman has been published for 70 years. In the first movie, we used Ra’s Al Ghul and the Scarecrow, who had not been in the movies before, and had not been in the ’60s TV show before.

“There are dozens if not hundreds of other characters that fit that bill. Everyone says it’s got to be the Penguin or Catwoman [in the next film]… well I completely disagree.”

It’s an interesting choice to eliminate the two most recognizable villains that have yet to be used in this trilogy, but I definitely see where he’s coming from. I feel like they’re trying to incorporate more of a Gangster/Underground, organized crime feel to these movies. That’s what the first one played like, and “The Dark Knight” takes on a similar pace, according to reports and reviews I’ve read so far.

Catwoman has been made a complete joke thanks to Hollywood, especially after Halle Berry’s rendition, and wouldn’t play well in that kind of villainous role. But I could definitely see the Penguin, or “the gentleman of crime,” as a bad guy in the next film. All that would have to be done is to forget DeVito’s Penguin character and start from scratch, just like Heath Ledger did for The Joker this time around. Then The Penguin could be the mobster-type villain he was meant to be. Just because the character’s been used before doesn’t mean it can’t be original. I hate to use Ledger twice in a row to make my point, but he remade The Joker with his own interpretation; He didn’t base his performance around Jack Nicholson’s.

So far, Two-Face is rumored to come back, and Nolan and crew will introduce The Riddler…. what? How can you completely dismiss the Penguin because he’s been in a Batman movie before, and then turn right around and use The Riddler, who was played by Jim Carrey in 1995’s “Batman Forever”? Lame.

I really don’t know much about comic books, seeing as how I don’t read them, so I’m not too well-versed in the villains that haven’t ever been used in a Batman movie, but Wikipedia is great for that kind of thing. So, strictly based on their writeups on Wikipedia, these are some villains that I think would both be interesting to watch and well-placed in Nolan’s more realistic interpretation of Gothman:

1. Black Mask

Roman Sionis, a former business executive who originally hated Bruce Wayne rather than Batman, wears a Black Mask and leads the cult-like False Face Society of henchmen. Black Mask eventually became a mob boss controlling large sections of Gotham’s criminal underworld.

I think that backstory sounds fitting, but there is one problem: after “The Dark Knight,” there may already be one major crime boss, especially if they bring Two-Face back for the third. One of the reasons I really think “The Dark Knight” will be great is the dynamic between the two villains; The Joker has been described as a character like the shark in “Jaws,” attacking at completely random times with no rhyme or reason. Two-Face is more like a mob boss, and it might be confusing to introduce to competing crime world rulers.

2. The original Clayface

This one’s really confusing, because there are apparently many different adaptations of the character.

Basil Karlo, was an actor who was driven mad when he heard of a remake of the classic horror film he had starred in, The Terror. Adopting the persona of the film’s villain “Clayface”, he became a serial killer targeting the cast and crew.

This could be an interesting character, and one that won’t interfere with Two-Face’s criminal underworld meddling.

3. Killer Moth

Cameron van Cleer/Drury Walker was an anti-Batman who aided criminals just as Batman aids the police, but only for money.

That could be an interesting confrontation, I think. But only if they make him look less ridiculous than this picture on the right.

I don’t know what you’re talking about – that third guy is the coolest-looking villain ever.

I think Bane would be a good Villain to introduce. The Riddle would be good, as long as they keep the role Dark and Crazy, then The Jim-Carrey Role where he was a happy little boy in a green suit with a cane :S

Could Bane really be a stand alone villain? I don’t know that much about the comic books, so all I know him as is the mindless drone from “Batman and Robin.” I do know that he’s the one responsible for breaking Batman’s spinal chord, which would be such a depressing ending to the trilogy, if in fact Nolan intends to end it after the third movie.

I could see The Ventriloquist, from the animated series, being a good fit. Weird, sadistic and somewhat realistic, which is the way Nolan is going to want it. Bale also said that he would never do a batman if robin was to be involved.

I completely agree as to why Catwoman was scrapped, she would never fit in with the theme. And although at first Pengiun seems to fit in with the mob boss/criminal underworld theme that Nolan has established, at the same time his motives are too logical and rational in that he’s in it for the money. Joker was the key adversary in The Dark Knight as he was the agent of raw, unchecked chaos. Penguin makes too much sense to really challenge Batman the way Joker did.

I think that the Penguin aspect would be most convincing. The Black Mask looks too much like Two-Face. The Riddler would seem redundant after the Joker since, in the Dark Knight, he created so many philosphical quandries for Batman as it were. The Penguin could be portrayed as a corporate, white-collar criminal that utilized the crime underworld to his advantage – especially if he were a mob boss as well. It could be a more cerebral film where Bruce Wayne would have to fight the Penguin on one level and then as Batman on the other level.

But that is just my opinion. And Phillip Seymour Hoffman should play the Penguin.

I am completely fine with seeing the Riddler in the sequel to “Dark Knight”. With the unfortunate death of Heath Ledger, there is a need for that type of character. Most villains that are introduced in comic books don’t fit the whole dark gloomy vibe that Chris Nolan is going for. Here are some characters that would fit for the next film

RIDDLER:Johnny Depp would be a perfect fit for the riddler because of his versatility as an actor. The riddler is a sinister, psychopathic, braniac who tends to steal the show with his comic relief, all of which Johnny Depp has portrayed in his former roles. Think about it: comic relief in “Pirates of the Carribean”. Sinister/psychopath in “Sweeney Todd”. He fits with the whole dark, gloomy look of Chris Nolan’s vision of batman films. Besides he even favors the riddler from the comic books.

CATWOMAN: I can’t picture who could play catwoman, maybe Angelina Jolie, but I do think that Nolan should place catwoman as Batman’s new love interest since Rachel is dead(sorry for spoiling). Also I do remember Lucius Fox telling Batman that his new suit “does well against cats”. FORESHADOWING!!!

The last thing I want to talk about is the debate over the Joker. Heath did a fantastic job as the Joker. He was the best person to EVER play the joker and there is never going to be a person to replace him. This was Heath Ledger’s legacy that he left behind and LEGENDS NEVER DIE!!!

    RIP Heath Ledger

I think a good sequel would be twoface coming back again but the way i took the ending of The Dark Knight was that twoface was dead…

If i were to have it my way, i would re-cast the Joker (as hated as that idea may be) but,
    1. it would spark interest in audiences to see the “new joker”,
    2. the Joker was alive at the end of The Dark Knight, and
    3. The Joker could potentially inspire someone in Gotham to become the Riddler as Batman inspired copycats of himself. Aha!
    (Yeah, i’m a good writer)

Also, I agree, no Penguin or Catwoman because they are two BIG villains and if twoface were to return or the Riddler appears, there would only be maximum enough room for either penguin or catwoman especially if Nolan intends to end with a third film only.

ok well after seeing this movie quite a bit i have realized quite a few things. Riddler will most likely be in the third movie as the accountant because there are some parts in the movie that can show that. when everyone interviewing him runs he tries to run the other way and at the hospital scene when the camera guy and crew run he is there and runs the other way. after thinking and such about it he could have been drivin crazy by the mob or the police or someone and he tries to seek help and joker uses him. Yes they most likely will recast joker as someone who is only SIMILAR. either way they do this they are going to piss alot of people off. if they dont they just finished joker when he is supposed to be the main villian and so many people love him but as well they are recasting someone to just do worst as him so its facing a double-edged sword. ok so for the other villians after thought they could have bane in there as the head of mob who eventually gets used by joker. he fits in because a lot of the mob head starting dying. another one would be the madhatter because the theme of both movies is the entire city being torn down or destroyed or have the people tearing eachother apart and he was crazy and such that he would be able to be used enough until someone else came in.

Two face is still alive…. The memorial (note: its not a burrial) at the end is for Harvey Dent… Dent dies a hero in Gothams eyes, and Batman takes the blame for the crimes of Dents alter ego (two face). Gordon would have helped cover up that Dent is alive as Two Face following his promise to Batman at the end of TDK….

The opening of the next will have an abulence crew come to take away the body of two face (right where Dark Knight ends), but find the body has gone. Maybe someone has taken Dents body away to nurse him back to health. Could be Ra’s Al Ghul? He has powers to bring people back in the comic, and could be alive still? Think about it… You never see the body in Batman Begins, just the train go down, and he has excess to pools of immortality in the comics. I think he will just have a cameo though, in order to surprise the audience and be a way of explaining how Dent survives (bit like how they tied up the Scarecrow thing in TDK)? Ra’s Al Ghul tries to do good (but by immoral means) and Dent was once completely good… I think Ra’s Al Ghul would try to use that to his advantage maybe, and the fact that Two face (Dent) is now more ruthless in his morals?

Then he will come up against the Penguin… a ruthless mob boss who is somehow connected to the mob members two face kills at the end of TDK. Two face will flip the coin, but Penguin is lucky, so two face lets him live, and this my friends is where Penguin will persuade Harvey two face to help him bring down Batman so that crime can once again rule gotham. Ehat you think????

well theres a problem with that is where is joker??? they arent going to let him just not come back. he was supposed to be in the next film and he just got big too. but also if you do research the riddler will be in it and the directors said that catwomen and penguin werent going to be in the next film. i like your idea dont get me wrong it sounds pretty awesome but it seems like the way the films are going they will add some villians that not many people know as well as others. but i didnt remember that of harvey so ill have to go back and watch it…..again 😀 and having Ra’s Al Ghul still alive…makes sense too.

I really really really dont see two face coming back. His death had significance in itself. he was the fallen deceased white knight and batman is the dark knight. There is no place for him in the third film it is time to move on. Penguin needs to be the next villian and it is time to get tim burton’s view of him out of everyones head. He will be an old school mob boss that is let out of arkam asylum on good behavior. He will then challenge the black mask for the throne of the underground crime world. I do think you could have bane in it for a cameo. He could be working for the black mask as a henchmen/wrestler and he has a long fight scene in the beginning with batman. He’ll put up a good fight but eventually be subdued. Nolan’s Idea of batman really involves gangsters for villians not the old comical villians that we’re used to. You have to keep it real. Moth man, clay face, or catwoman do not work here.

by the way if you were to have the joker come back like maybe for a cameo the perfect actor to play him would be james franco from spiderman.

i cant see james franco as joker. i personally want to see joker but i know i wont and im kinda glad for it too. oh and i was thinking of black mask…not bane, oops. but i cant really see penguin being the enemy in the next movie. i dont see him being able to give batman a huge challenge. and penguin is also more of a comical villian with the way they portrait him he looks too much like a human penguin. i agree with the others that you previously mentioned too. others that dont work are people like mr. freeze. he generates huge amounts of ice from where??? with this batman it wouldnt make sense. black mask would work well, i still personally want to see joker but hey its just my thoughts

I think an amazing equel would be to cover the Batman: Knightfall story line. The whole story follows Nolans darker theme. Bane isnt strong enough to carry the whole movie, but with Azrael, Robin, etc, itd be amazing!! alot of work, but amazing none the less
